M.I.A., but here to stay.

Yeah. I've been gone for over a month now, but that was due to crud beyond my control with getting my new place and all. Well, now that I'm back in business, time for a review of the Anime series, Godannar.

Godannar, at first glance, seems like your run of the mill giant robot (mecha) anime. However, there's more to it than meets the eye. Godannar is about a Giant Robot pilot named Goh Saruwatari who marries a girl named Anna. Anna finds out that Goh is a mech pilot and hilarity and chaos ensues.

Humor is one of the keystones of this series and it deals it in spades. From overabundant fanservice to domestic dischord, there's never a dull moment in Godannar. One of the running jokes concerns Anna's overly-endowed mother and fellow comrade Shizuru's badunkadunk ;)

Action is where this series shines. The battles against the main antagonists, the Mimetic Beasts, are intense and over the top. The Mimetic Beast are sort of like the Angels in Neon Genesis Evangelion, except that they are hive mind entities. If anyone has ever played the Dreamcast game Tech Romancer, then you will have a good idea of what I'm talking about. If not, then imagine a sort of Dragon Ball Z type battle sequence, only with mechs and gargantuan fire power that will make the United States military blush.

Near the end, however, the series sort of fizzles out, as with most anime series as of late. The story shifts from being an action-comedy of sorts, to being a serious drama. This turn sort of kills the original mood, in the sense that some of the main characters are lowballed for some of the more, for lack of a better word, "insignificant" characters.

All in all, Godannar is a decent series. I won't go so far as say that it's an awesome series, as there are too many flaws, especially near the end, that hurt the series badly. However, that doesn't mean that one shouldn't give it a try.

Final Score: 7/10
